National Organ Transplant Act
The National Organ Transplant Act (NOTA) was enacted in 1984 to promote organ donation and establish a fair system for organ allocation in the United States. It prohibits the buying and selling of organs, ensuring that donations are made voluntarily and without financial incentive. The act also created the framework for the establishment of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN), which coordinates organ transplant activities nationwide.
NOTA aims to increase the availability of organs for transplantation and improve the efficiency of the transplant process. It supports research and education about organ donation, helping to raise public awareness and encourage more individuals to consider becoming organ donors.
