National Heritage Areas
National Heritage Areas (NHAs) are designated regions in the United States that recognize and preserve significant cultural, historical, and natural resources. These areas are often established to promote public awareness and appreciation of the unique heritage of a community or region. NHAs are managed through partnerships between local, state, and federal entities, as well as private organizations.
The National Park Service (NPS) oversees the NHA program, providing support and guidance to help communities develop and implement conservation and educational initiatives. Each NHA is distinct, reflecting the specific history and culture of its area, such as the Appalachian Trail or the Santa Fe Trail.
