National Estuarine Research Reserve System
The National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) is a network of protected coastal areas in the United States, established to promote research, education, and stewardship of estuarine ecosystems. These reserves serve as sites for scientific study and provide valuable data on the health of coastal environments, which are crucial for biodiversity and human communities.
NERRS includes 29 reserves across the country, each focusing on the unique characteristics of its local estuary. The program is managed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in partnership with state agencies, ensuring that these vital ecosystems are preserved for future generations.
