National Defense Education Act
The National Defense Education Act (NDEA) was enacted in 1958 in response to the launch of the Soviet satellite, Sputnik. This legislation aimed to improve American education in science, mathematics, and foreign languages to ensure national security and competitiveness during the Cold War. It provided federal funding for schools, colleges, and universities to enhance educational programs and resources.
The NDEA also established student loan programs, making higher education more accessible to many Americans. By supporting research and training in critical fields, the act sought to prepare a skilled workforce capable of addressing the challenges posed by global tensions and technological advancements.
