Nasal Structure
The nasal structure consists of the external nose and the internal nasal cavity. The external nose is made up of cartilage and bone, giving it shape and support. It has two nostrils, or nares, which allow air to enter. The internal nasal cavity is lined with mucous membranes that help filter, warm, and humidify the air we breathe.
Inside the nasal cavity, there are three pairs of nasal conchae, or turbinates, which increase the surface area for air contact. The nasal cavity also connects to the sinuses, which are air-filled spaces that help reduce the weight of the skull and enhance voice resonance.
