Nails are hard, protective coverings found on the tips of fingers and toes in humans and many animals. They are made primarily of a protein called keratin, which is also found in hair and skin. Nails serve several functions, including protecting the sensitive tips of fingers and toes, enhancing the ability to grasp objects, and aiding in the sense of touch.
Nails grow from a tissue called the nail matrix, located under the base of the nail. As new cells are produced in the matrix, older cells are pushed out, causing the nail to grow. Regular care, such as trimming and cleaning, helps maintain nail health and appearance.
