NGC 1059 is a barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation Eridanus. It is approximately 60 million light-years away from Earth and is part of the Lyon-Meudon Extragalactic Database.
Discovered by the astronomer John Herschel in 1834, NGC 1059 has a visual magnitude of about 13.5, making it faint and challenging to observe without a telescope. The galaxy exhibits a distinct bar structure, which is characteristic of barred spiral galaxies, and is surrounded by a faint halo of stars and gas.
