NGC 4993
NGC 4993 is a spiral galaxy located approximately 500 million light-years away in the constellation Hydra. It is notable for its bright core and distinct spiral arms, which are characteristic features of spiral galaxies.
In August 2017, NGC 4993 gained significant attention when it was identified as the host galaxy of a gravitational wave event, known as GW170817. This event marked the first detection of gravitational waves from a neutron star merger, providing valuable insights into the origins of heavy elements like gold and platinum in the universe.
