NGC 3377
NGC 3377 is an elliptical galaxy located in the constellation Leo. It is approximately 50 million light-years away from Earth and is part of the Leo I Group of galaxies. NGC 3377 has a diameter of about 50,000 light-years and is characterized by its smooth, featureless appearance, typical of elliptical galaxies.
Discovered by the astronomer William Herschel in 1784, NGC 3377 contains a significant population of older stars and very little interstellar gas and dust. This lack of gas means that new star formation is minimal, making it a relatively quiescent galaxy compared to its spiral counterparts.
