Myenteric Plexus
The myenteric plexus is a network of neurons located between the layers of the muscularis externa in the gastrointestinal tract. It plays a crucial role in regulating the motility of the intestines, coordinating the contractions of the smooth muscle to facilitate digestion and movement of food.
Part of the enteric nervous system, the myenteric plexus works alongside the submucosal plexus to control various digestive functions. It receives input from the central nervous system and local sensory neurons, allowing it to respond to changes in the gut environment and maintain proper digestive processes.
