Murex brandaris
Murex brandaris is a species of sea snail belonging to the family Muricidae, commonly known as the rock snails. These marine gastropods are found in the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern Atlantic Ocean. They are characterized by their distinctive, spiny shells, which can grow up to 15 centimeters in length. The shell's color varies from brown to purple, often with intricate patterns.
This species plays a significant role in the ecosystem, serving as both predator and prey. Murex brandaris is also historically important, as it was used in ancient times to produce a purple dye known as Tyrian purple, highly valued in antiquity for its vibrant color.
