Multiphonics
Multiphonics is a technique used in music, particularly with wind instruments, where a player produces two or more distinct pitches simultaneously. This effect is achieved by manipulating the instrument's embouchure, air pressure, and fingerings, allowing for a richer and more complex sound. It is commonly found in contemporary classical music and jazz.
This technique is often associated with instruments like the saxophone, flute, and clarinet. Composers such as Edgard Varèse and Olivier Messiaen have incorporated multiphonics into their works, expanding the expressive capabilities of these instruments and challenging traditional notions of harmony and melody.
