Mucolytic
A mucolytic is a type of medication that helps break down and thin mucus in the airways. This makes it easier to cough up and clear out, which can be particularly helpful for individuals with respiratory conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or cystic fibrosis.
Mucolytics work by altering the structure of mucus, reducing its viscosity. Common examples include acetylcysteine and carbocisteine. These medications can improve breathing and overall lung function by facilitating the removal of excess mucus from the respiratory tract.
