Mount Athos Monasteries
Mount Athos is a unique peninsula in northern Greece known for its rich monastic tradition. It is home to 20 monasteries that follow the Eastern Orthodox Christian faith. These monasteries are renowned for their stunning architecture, ancient manuscripts, and spiritual heritage, attracting pilgrims and visitors from around the world.
The entire region is an autonomous monastic state, governed by its own laws and regulations. Access to Mount Athos is restricted, with only male visitors allowed, and they must obtain a special permit. This preservation of tradition and spirituality makes the Mount Athos Monasteries a significant cultural and religious site.
