Missouria
The term "Missouria" refers to a Native American tribe that originally inhabited the region now known as Missouri. They were part of the larger Siouan language family and were known for their agricultural practices, including the cultivation of crops like corn and beans. The Missouria people lived in villages along the Missouri River and engaged in trade with neighboring tribes.
In the 19th century, the Missouria faced significant challenges due to European-American expansion and settlement. Many members of the tribe were forced to relocate, and their population declined due to disease and conflict. Today, the descendants of the Missouria are part of the Otoe-Missouria Tribe, which is federally recognized and continues to preserve their cultural heritage.
