Miami's history began with the indigenous Tequesta people, who inhabited the area for thousands of years before European contact. In the 16th century, Spanish explorers arrived, but it wasn't until the late 19th century that Miami was officially founded. The city was incorporated in 1896, largely due to the development of the Florida East Coast Railway by Henry Flagler, which connected it to other parts of the state. Throughout the 20th century, Miami grew rapidly, becoming a major tourist destination and cultural hub. The city experienced significant demographic changes, especially with the influx of Cuban immigrants after the 1959 revolution.
