The Mexican Salamander, also known as the Axolotl, is a unique amphibian native to the lake complex of Xochimilco near Mexico City. It is famous for its ability to regenerate lost body parts, including limbs, spinal cord, and even parts of its heart and brain. This aquatic creature remains in its larval form throughout its life, a phenomenon known as neoteny, which means it retains its gills and aquatic features.
Mexican Salamanders are typically pink or brown and can grow up to 12 inches long. They are critically endangered in the wild due to habitat loss, pollution, and invasive species. However, they are commonly bred in captivity for scientific research and as pets.
