Messier 64
Messier 64, also known as the "Black Eye Galaxy," is a spiral galaxy located about 17 million light-years away in the constellation Coma Berenices. It is notable for its dark band of dust that obscures the bright center, giving it a distinctive appearance reminiscent of a black eye.
Discovered by Heinrich Louis d'Arrest in 1864, Messier 64 is classified as a type of SAB(rs)bc galaxy. It has a diameter of approximately 50,000 light-years and contains a significant number of young, hot stars, contributing to its bright core. The galaxy is also home to several globular clusters.
