Meroitic
The term "Meroitic" refers to the language and script used in the ancient Kingdom of Meroƫ, located in present-day Sudan. This civilization thrived from around 300 BCE to 350 CE and was known for its rich culture and significant contributions to art and architecture. Meroitic is primarily known from inscriptions on monuments, pottery, and other artifacts.
Meroitic script consists of two alphasyllabaries: hieroglyphs and cursive forms. The hieroglyphic script was used for monumental inscriptions, while the cursive script was employed for writing on papyrus. The language is believed to be related to the Nubian languages, but it remains only partially understood due to the limited number of surviving texts.
