Mercedarian Order
The Mercedarian Order, officially known as the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy, is a Catholic religious order founded in 1218 in Barcelona, Spain. Its primary mission is to rescue Christians who have been captured and enslaved by Muslim forces. The order was established by Saint Peter Nolasco, who sought to provide a means of redemption for those in captivity.
Members of the Mercedarian Order take a special vow to offer themselves as hostages if necessary to secure the freedom of others. Over the centuries, the order has expanded its focus to include various forms of service, such as education and pastoral care, while continuing its commitment to social justice and the dignity of all individuals.
