A meniscus is a crescent-shaped cartilage structure found in certain joints, most notably in the knee. It acts as a cushion between the bones, helping to absorb shock and stabilize the joint during movement. There are two menisci in each knee: the medial meniscus on the inner side and the lateral meniscus on the outer side.
In addition to its role in cushioning, the meniscus also aids in distributing weight across the joint, which helps to prevent wear and tear on the cartilage and bones. Injuries to the meniscus can lead to pain, swelling, and reduced mobility, often requiring medical attention.
