Megachasma pelagios
Megachasma pelagios, commonly known as the megamouth shark, is a rare species of deep-water shark discovered in 1976. It is characterized by its large, wide mouth, which can open up to 1.2 meters (4 feet) to filter-feed on plankton and small fish. This species can grow up to 5.5 meters (18 feet) in length and has a unique, dark coloration that helps it blend into the ocean depths.
The megamouth shark is primarily found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world. It is a slow-moving, nocturnal creature that often swims near the surface at night to feed. Due to its elusive nature and limited sightings, the megamouth shark remains poorly understood, making it a subject of interest for marine biologists and researchers.
