Mediterranean monk seal
The Mediterranean monk seal is a marine mammal found primarily in the Mediterranean Sea. It is one of the world's rarest seal species, characterized by its robust body, short snout, and a coat that ranges from light to dark brown. Adults can weigh up to 300 pounds and measure about 8 to 10 feet in length.
These seals prefer rocky coastlines and secluded beaches for breeding and resting. They primarily feed on fish, squid, and crustaceans. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect their dwindling population, which is threatened by habitat loss, fishing activities, and pollution.
