The maxillary sinuses are air-filled spaces located within the maxilla, or upper jawbone, on either side of the nose. They are the largest of the paranasal sinuses and play a role in reducing the weight of the skull, enhancing voice resonance, and providing insulation for the teeth. Each sinus is lined with a mucous membrane that helps trap dust and pathogens, contributing to respiratory health. These sinuses drain into the nasal cavity through small openings, allowing mucus to flow and maintain proper function. Inflammation or infection of the maxillary sinuses, known as sinusitis, can lead to symptoms such as facial pain, congestion, and headaches.
