Mary Seacole
Mary Seacole was a Jamaican nurse and businesswoman known for her contributions during the Crimean War. Born in 1805, she was of mixed heritage, with a Scottish father and a Jamaican mother. Seacole established a hotel in Balaklava, where she provided care to wounded soldiers, earning respect for her dedication and skills.
Despite her significant efforts, Seacole was often overlooked in historical accounts compared to her contemporary, Florence Nightingale. She faced racial prejudice but persevered, becoming a symbol of resilience. Her legacy is celebrated for breaking barriers in nursing and for her humanitarian work in the face of adversity.
