Mars Climate Orbiter
The Mars Climate Orbiter was a robotic spacecraft launched by NASA on December 11, 1998. Its primary mission was to study the Martian climate and atmosphere, providing valuable data to help scientists understand weather patterns and seasonal changes on Mars. The orbiter was designed to operate in a low Martian orbit, allowing for detailed observations.
Unfortunately, the mission ended in failure when the spacecraft was lost on September 23, 1999, due to a navigation error caused by a mix-up between metric and imperial units. This incident highlighted the importance of standardizing measurements in space missions, leading to improved practices in future projects involving NASA and other space agencies.
