Marquis
A "Marquis" is a noble title in the hierarchy of the aristocracy, ranking above an Earl or Count and below a Duke. The title originated in the Middle Ages and was often granted to individuals who governed border territories, known as "marches."
In modern times, the title is mostly ceremonial and is used in various countries, including France and England. A marquis may hold land and have certain privileges, but their political power has diminished significantly compared to historical times. The female equivalent of a marquis is a Marchioness.
