Marcher Lords
Marcher Lords were a group of noble families in medieval England, particularly during the 12th to 16th centuries. They were granted lands along the borders of Wales and Scotland, known as the Marches, to defend against invasions and maintain order. Their unique status allowed them to exercise considerable power and autonomy, often acting independently of the central monarchy.
These lords played a crucial role in the borderlands, where conflicts were common. They were responsible for local law enforcement and military defense, often leading their own troops. The Marcher Lords contributed to the shaping of regional identities and the political landscape of England and Wales.
