Maracatu
Maracatu is a traditional Brazilian cultural expression that originated in the state of Pernambuco. It combines music, dance, and vibrant costumes, often performed during Carnival. The genre features a strong rhythm played by a variety of percussion instruments, including the alfaias (large drums) and caboclos (smaller drums), creating an energetic atmosphere.
The performances typically involve a procession led by a rei (king) and rainha (queen), who represent the African heritage of the tradition. Dancers, known as maracatuzeiros, wear elaborate costumes that reflect the history and culture of the Afro-Brazilian community, making Maracatu a colorful and significant part of Brazil's cultural landscape.
