Maqamat is a classical Arabic literary genre that combines storytelling with poetry. It originated in the 10th century and is characterized by its use of rhymed prose, known as sajĘż. The narratives often feature a clever protagonist, who embarks on various adventures, showcasing wit and eloquence.
The most famous work in this genre is Maqamat al-Hariri, written by the poet Al-Hariri in the 11th century. This collection consists of 50 stories that highlight themes of social life, morality, and the art of rhetoric. Maqamat has influenced Arabic literature and continues to be studied for its linguistic and cultural significance.
