Major General George H. Thomas
Major General George H. Thomas was a prominent Union general during the American Civil War. Born on July 31, 1816, in Virginia, he graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1840. Thomas earned the nickname "The Rock of Chickamauga" for his steadfast defense during the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863, which was one of the war's significant conflicts.
Throughout the war, Thomas played crucial roles in several key battles, including the Battle of Nashville and the Battle of Chattanooga. His leadership and tactical skills contributed to the Union's success, and he is remembered as one of the war's most effective commanders. Thomas passed away on March 28, 1870.
