Magnetic South Pole
The Magnetic South Pole is the point on the Earth's surface where the planet's magnetic field points vertically downwards. Unlike the geographic South Pole, which is located at 90 degrees south latitude, the Magnetic South Pole is constantly moving due to changes in the Earth's magnetic field. This movement is influenced by the flow of molten iron within the Earth's outer core.
Scientists use the Magnetic South Pole for navigation and to understand the Earth's magnetic properties. The position of the Magnetic South Pole is important for compasses, as they align with the Earth's magnetic field. As a result, knowing its location helps in accurate navigation, especially in remote areas like Antarctica, where the geographic and magnetic poles differ significantly.
