Homonym: Méduse (Jellyfish)
The term "Méduse" refers to a figure from Greek mythology, known as one of the three Gorgons. She is often depicted as a winged woman with snakes for hair, and anyone who gazed directly at her would turn to stone. Méduse is the most famous of the Gorgons and is sometimes portrayed as a tragic figure.
In addition to her mythological significance, "Méduse" is also the name of a famous shipwreck that occurred in 1816 off the coast of Senegal. The ship, the Méduse, ran aground, leading to a harrowing survival story that inspired the painting "The Raft of the Medusa" by Théodore Géricault.
