Lysosomal Enzymes
Lysosomal enzymes are specialized proteins found in the lysosomes, which are organelles within cells. These enzymes are responsible for breaking down various biomolecules, including proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids. They help recycle cellular components and remove waste, ensuring the cell functions properly.
These enzymes operate optimally in acidic conditions, which is maintained within the lysosome. If lysosomal enzymes are deficient or malfunctioning, it can lead to various diseases, known as lysosomal storage disorders, where harmful substances accumulate in cells, causing damage and dysfunction.
