Lunar Orbiter
The Lunar Orbiter was a series of five robotic spacecraft launched by NASA between 1966 and 1967. Their primary mission was to map the Moon's surface in preparation for future crewed lunar landings, including the upcoming Apollo missions. The spacecraft captured high-resolution images, providing valuable data about the Moon's topography and potential landing sites.
Each Lunar Orbiter was equipped with a camera system that took photographs from various altitudes. The mission successfully returned over 2000 images, significantly enhancing our understanding of the Moon's geology and surface features. The data collected contributed to the planning of the first human landings on the Moon.
