Lumbar Spinal Cord
The lumbar spinal cord is a part of the central nervous system located in the lower back. It consists of five segments, labeled L1 to L5, and is responsible for transmitting nerve signals between the brain and the lower body. This region controls movements and sensations in the legs and feet.
In addition to its role in movement, the lumbar spinal cord also contains nerve roots that contribute to the sciatic nerve, which is the largest nerve in the body. Damage to this area can lead to issues such as pain, weakness, or loss of function in the lower extremities.
