Lufthansa Flight 181
Lufthansa Flight 181 was a scheduled passenger flight from Palma de Mallorca to Frankfurt that was hijacked on October 13, 1977. The aircraft, a Boeing 737, was taken over by members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and diverted to Mogadishu, Somalia.
The hijacking lasted for several days, during which the German government negotiated for the passengers' release. On October 18, GSG 9, the German counter-terrorism unit, stormed the plane, successfully rescuing all hostages and killing the hijackers. This event significantly impacted Germany's approach to terrorism and aviation security.
