Loyalist Paramilitaries
Loyalist paramilitaries are armed groups in Northern Ireland that emerged during the conflict known as the Troubles, which lasted from the late 1960s to 1998. These groups primarily aimed to maintain Northern Ireland's status as part of the United Kingdom and often opposed Irish republican movements. They were involved in violent activities, including attacks on individuals and communities perceived as threats to their cause.
Key loyalist paramilitary organizations include the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) and the Ulster Defence Association (UDA). These groups have been responsible for numerous killings and acts of intimidation. While some have since engaged in political processes, others continue to exist, reflecting ongoing tensions in the region.
