Lower Intertidal
The Lower Intertidal zone is the area of the shoreline that is submerged during high tide and exposed during low tide. This zone is typically found just above the subtidal zone and is characterized by a diverse range of marine life, including various species of seaweeds, barnacles, and mollusks. The environment here is influenced by both ocean currents and wave action, which helps to distribute nutrients.
Organisms in the Lower Intertidal have adaptations to survive the changing conditions of water levels and salinity. Many species, such as sea stars and anemones, can withstand periods of exposure to air and are often found clinging to rocks or other surfaces. This zone plays a crucial role in coastal ecosystems, providing habitat and food for numerous marine species.
