Lounes Matoub
Lounes Matoub was an Algerian singer, poet, and activist, born on January 24, 1956, in Tizi Ouzou, Algeria. He was known for his contributions to the Berber cultural movement and his efforts to promote the Tamazight language. Matoub's music often addressed social and political issues, reflecting the struggles of the Berber people.
Matoub gained international recognition for his powerful lyrics and unique style, blending traditional Berber music with modern influences. He faced significant challenges throughout his life, including imprisonment and threats due to his outspoken views. Tragically, he was assassinated on June 25, 1998, which sparked widespread protests and mourning in Algeria.
