Homonym: Loon (Crazy)
Loon was a project developed by Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, aimed at providing internet access to remote and underserved areas using high-altitude balloons. These balloons floated in the stratosphere, creating a network that transmitted internet signals to ground stations and users' devices.
The project began in 2013 and utilized solar-powered balloons that could stay aloft for extended periods. Loon successfully tested its technology in various locations, including Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, but was ultimately discontinued in January 2021 due to challenges in scaling the service and achieving financial sustainability.
