Lockport Locks
The Lockport Locks are a series of locks located on the Erie Canal in Lockport, New York. They were constructed in the early 19th century to help boats navigate the elevation changes along the canal. The locks allow vessels to move between different water levels, making it possible to travel across the state of New York.
The Lockport Locks consist of two main locks, known as the Upper Lock and the Lower Lock. Together, they raise and lower boats by a total of about 49 feet. This engineering feat was crucial for trade and transportation during the canal's peak usage, significantly contributing to the economic development of the region.
