Lindisfarne Gospels
The Lindisfarne Gospels is an illuminated manuscript created around the year 700 AD on the island of Lindisfarne in Northumberland, England. It is one of the finest examples of Insular art, blending Celtic, Roman, and Anglo-Saxon styles. The manuscript contains the four Gospels of the New Testament, beautifully illustrated with intricate designs and vibrant colors.
The work was commissioned by Eadfrith, the Bishop of Lindisfarne, and is notable for its detailed illustrations, including the famous carpet pages and portraits of the Evangelists. The Lindisfarne Gospels is now housed in the British Library and is considered a national treasure of the United Kingdom.
