Liminality
Liminality refers to a transitional phase in which individuals or groups find themselves between two distinct states or conditions. This concept is often associated with rituals and rites of passage, where participants move from one social status to another. During this period, normal social structures and norms may be suspended, allowing for new identities and roles to emerge.
The term originates from the Latin word "limen," meaning "threshold." In anthropology, Victor Turner popularized the idea, emphasizing the importance of this in-between state for personal and cultural transformation. Liminal spaces can be physical, like doorways or bridges, or metaphorical, representing moments of change in life.
