Limenitis arthemis
Limenitis arthemis, commonly known as the red-spotted purple butterfly, is a striking species found in North America. It typically inhabits wooded areas, gardens, and open fields. The wings are dark blue to black with distinctive orange and white spots, making it easily recognizable.
This butterfly has a wingspan of about 2.5 to 3.5 inches and is known for its mimicry of the toxic Danaus plexippus, or monarch butterfly, which helps it avoid predators. The larvae feed on various plants, including Prunus species, and undergo a complete metamorphosis from egg to caterpillar to pupa before emerging as an adult.
