Lili Elbe
Lili Elbe was a Danish painter and one of the first known recipients of gender confirmation surgery. Born in 1882 as Einar Wegener, she became a prominent figure in the early 20th-century art scene. Elbe's journey of gender transition began in the 1910s, inspired by her experiences and the support of her wife, Gerda Wegener, who was also an artist.
Elbe's life and transition were groundbreaking for the time, challenging societal norms about gender identity. She underwent several surgeries in the 1930s, ultimately becoming a symbol of the transgender rights movement. Lili Elbe passed away in 1931, leaving a lasting legacy in both art and transgender history.
