Liberian Civil Wars
The Liberian Civil Wars were two brutal conflicts that took place in Liberia from 1989 to 1997 and again from 1999 to 2003. The first war began when the National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL), led by Charles Taylor, launched an uprising against the government of President Samuel Doe. The conflict involved various factions and resulted in widespread violence, displacement, and loss of life.
The second civil war erupted in 1999, primarily involving the Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD) and the Movement for Democracy in Liberia (MODEL), both opposing Taylor's regime. This war ended in 2003, leading to Taylor's resignation and the establishment of a transitional government, paving the way for peace and eventual elections in Liberia.
