Leviathan of Parsonstown
The Leviathan of Parsonstown is a historic telescope built in the 19th century by the astronomer William Parsons, the 3rd Earl of Rosse. Located in Parsonstown, Ireland, it was the largest telescope in the world at the time, with a mirror measuring 1.83 meters (72 inches) in diameter. The telescope was primarily used for astronomical observations, including detailed studies of nebulae.
Constructed between 1842 and 1845, the Leviathan was a significant advancement in telescope technology. Its design featured a unique wooden structure and a large, rotating mount, allowing for precise tracking of celestial objects. The telescope contributed to the field of astronomy and inspired future innovations in telescope design.
