Lesser Goldfinch
The Lesser Goldfinch is a small songbird belonging to the finch family, known scientifically as *Spinus psaltria*. It typically measures about 4.5 to 5.5 inches in length and has a wingspan of around 7.5 to 9 inches. This bird is characterized by its bright yellow underparts, black or dark green back, and distinctive black cap on its head.
Lesser Goldfinches are commonly found in open woodlands, gardens, and shrubby areas across the western United States and parts of Mexico. They primarily feed on seeds, particularly those from sunflowers and dandelions, and are often seen foraging in flocks. Their cheerful songs and lively behavior make them a favorite among birdwatchers.
