Leatherback sea turtle
The Leatherback sea turtle is the largest species of sea turtle, reaching lengths of up to 6.5 feet and weighing as much as 2,000 pounds. Unlike other turtles, it has a unique, leathery shell instead of a hard, bony one. This adaptation allows it to dive deeper and swim more efficiently in the ocean.
Leatherbacks are found in oceans worldwide, often migrating long distances between feeding and nesting sites. They primarily feed on jellyfish, playing a crucial role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. Unfortunately, they face threats from habitat loss, climate change, and entanglement in fishing gear.
